Just saw Men in Black III, a pretty good movie, starring Will Smith (MIB 1 & 2, Independence Day), Tommy Lee Jones (MIB 1 & 2, No Country For Old Men), Josh Brolin (W, No Country For Old Men), Jemaine Clement who plays the bad alien Boris (Dinner for Schmucks, Rio), Emma Thompson (Love Actually, Nanny McPhee), and Michael Stuhlbarq (Hugo, Body of Lies). Oh, and a lot more aliens than ever before.
So this is the third edition of MIB, been 10 years since the last. Rip Torn, the leader of the Men In Black, died last year, so he has been replaced by Emma Thompson, she did great.
So here we go. The story is a time travel story. In the very first MIB, there was a alien called Boris who was going to invade earth. The MIB stopped him at the last moment, Tommy Lee Jones did not kill him, but he did blast his arm off. Then they carted him up to a moon-based prison, chained him up and left him there. He breaks out, and time travels back to 1969, where he meets a young Tommy Lee Jones (played very well by Josh Brolin), plans on killing him then so Jones can’t stop his earth invasion plan years later. Before we get into the past, we have Jones and Smith, or as they are known as, J and K, doing what they do best, going after them creatures from another planet. This time they find a oriental chop house that serves some nasty worms. And one huge fish. I mean Buick size. Of course, it gets out, and almost makes a meal of Smith. J and K have a time of reflection following, and then it gets sticky. Jones is sitting at home, he sort of warps into another time zone, Smith then has some weird cravings for chocolate milk, which as we all know is a sign of time-travelitis.
So the MIB has a dual history, one with Jones alive, another with his having been killed in 1969. Our hero, Will Smith, travels back to 1969, the day before Jones was killed to stop the killing. The movie is well done, the 1969 section has 1969 music playing, cars and all the stuff we found in that era. The big show-down is at Cape Canaveral, as the first moon shot is about to go up. Not gonna be a plot spoiler here, but you have two Boris’ fighting two Jones, along with a Will Smith thrown in for good measure, don’t go get the popcorn in the last 15 minutes. And Brolin has Tommy Lee nailed, the words, mannerisms, even the way he squints at Will when he is not believing a word he says. They pulled together a bunch of small details, it was well done. We will go with 3 Bogladites. The aliens that are led by Boris, trying to invade earth.
